The Spooner Knights of Columbus helped St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Spooner hold a Silver Rose service during Mass on Thursday, March 19.

In 1960, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico had done so much for the people that the Columbian Squires, a youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, wanted to give something back to her. The young men in Council 2312 in Monterrey, Mexico, came up with the idea of running a rose to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The rose was chosen to commemorate Juan Diego and roses.

The first rose was a natural one and was blessed by Bishop John C. Cody of London. It was flown to New York and received by Grand Knight Joseph Thomasen, who took it to Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart, who took the rose to Dallas, Texas. Texas State Deputy Jack Collerin received the rose and took it to Laredo, Texas, where it was given to the Mexican Squires at the International Bridge. The Squires ran the rose from the bridge through Sabinas Hidalgo N.L., Mexico, to Cienega de Flores and on to the Basilica in Monterrey on Dec. 12, 1960.

This is the short part of the story of the silver rose, and last Thursday morning, Fr. Papi Reddy Yeruva opened the Mass before turning the program over to Jeff Stellrecht, who led the church in prayer and gave readings.
